My Bio

I am Diomedes Rivera or Dio for short. I was born in Guayamilla on August 17, 1916 to my father Juan and my mother Petra. I was the eldest of 5 children and after high school I joined the Army in 1936 and earned my BCS at the University of Puerto Rico. I studied cooking in pastry mess management in Fort Dix for 15 months and was then promoted to Mess Steward Staff Sergeant in 1941. I was shipped to Panama was in charge of the Bakery and Pastry shop for the Army Commissary in Fort Buchanan Depot from 1942 to 1946. I served in the Canal Zone from 1946 to 1949 as a Food Ace Instructor. I came back to Fort Buchanan in Puerto Rico until 1954 as Chief Baker for all Armed Forces in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Sometimes we had to produce up to 30,000 loaves of bread when the boats came in for the transfer of troops. I was transferred to the Panama Canal from 1954 to 1957, then transferred to Ft. Polk in Alabama as an Instructor Food Ace. I then transferred to Fort Dix in New Jersey as a Food Supervisor until 1959. I got a job as a salesman for the grocery department of The Flour Mill in Puerto Rico and was promoted to Sales Manager in 1960. I then took over the Flour Mill serving all of Puerto Rico bakeries. I finally retired from Molinos de Puerto Rico in October of 1977 with 19 years and 4 months of service. It was not enough to qualify for the full pension with the Corps, but have been very happy with my decision to come back to States to take care of our daughter with special needs. There is no school in Puerto Rico like the one we have found in Tampa. We have been here since October of 1978. Thank you for sharing in my story and please check out the links at the bottom of the page.
